Quilt shop owners get so overwhelmed by the management of money. Many do not even know where to begin.

The experts tell quilt shop owners to sell online, do Facebook lives, and use this platform or that platform. And so they do, and the sales come in! But they still haven’t filed their taxes, or worse, they don’t have the money to pay their taxes.

They are working 60+ hours each week, barely getting any sleep. They know they need to hire somebody, but they don’t have the money to hire anybody.

Then one day, they look around the shop, and the shelves are all but empty! All the fabric, kits, and notions are all sold; only a few remain. They go to order new and replacement material, but…  

 

ERROR! Their card has been declined.

With a sinking feeling in their stomach, they find they have reached their credit limit, and their bank account has less than $500 in it. The panic is entirely on them now, “How am I going to replace all this inventory? How can I make more money if I don’t have anything to sell?”

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

I know because I have seen it.

Experts say that we MUST do our bookkeeping, understand the Profit and Loss Statement, tie out the Balance Sheet, calculate our Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and use financial metrics to grow and manage our business.

But no one takes the time to explain it, especially in a way that makes sense, that doesn’t take a college degree in finance, accounting, and tax to understand.

I’m Jacob Curtis, CPA, Profit Strategist, and owner of a quilt shop.

In 2019, I became the co-owner of a quilt shop that was on its very last leg: no money in the bank, nearly one hundred thousand dollars in debt, thousands owed in back taxes, and a partner who was completely overwhelmed.
